Religion - Religious Violence - Research Paper Example Bush against Muslim extremists (particularly in Afghanistan and Iraq), Islam has received a bashing from many Christian communities. For example in 2010, a Florida pastor attempted to burn copies of Koran as a sign of protest against the establishment of an Islamic center near Ground Zero (Cave and Barnard). Meanwhile, early this year, U.S. service members in Afghanistan burned copies of the Muslim holy books which has led to the attack of at least six U.S. military personnel (Sieff). With the refusal of the United States to recall its forces in Islamic territories and the countless complaints against human rights violation in Saudi Arabia, it is no longer a wonder why Islam is the first thing that comes to mind when one talks about religious violence. But history shows that religious violence is not isolated among Muslims, it can also happen among Christians. In this article, the author attempts to show that religious violence is mainly a Western concept. Instead of religion promoti ng the acts of aggression, violence done because of religion is a manifestation of a bigger issue that involves a power struggle and a misunderstanding among various world traditions. The idea that religion causes violence is prevalent in the West. This view is best explained by Christopher Hitchens’ book God is Not Great: How Religion Poisons Everything. In his work, Hitchens criticizes the major world traditions of Christianity, Islam, Buddhism, Judaism, Confucianism and Hinduism because of the violence these religions promote. He says totalitarianism is like religion because it aims for perfection, hence even the atheist regimes of Stalin and Kim Jong-Il may be classified as a religious impulse. Of religion he says: [It] is man-made. Even the men who made it cannot agree on what their prophets or redeemers or gurus actually said or did. Still less they can hope to tell us the â€Å"meaning† of later discoveries and developments which were†¦either obstructed by their religion or denounced by them. And yet -- the believers still claim to know! Not just to know, but to know everything. Not just know that god exists, and that he created and supervised the whole enterprise, but also to know what â€Å"he† demands of us. (Hitchens 10) Hitchens’ words are common among individuals rallying against fundamentalism and dogmatism in religion. He says that religion is violent, as proven by the violence found in the Bible (the crucifixion of Christ, the throwing of stones to punish an erring woman, etc.) and the Koran (war among the different tribes, etc.). Using this same logic, Hitchens claims that Martin Luther King Jr. was not a religious personality because he was non-violent. Religion poisons everything because it leads people to become irrational – because it poses an absolute truth despite the reality that imperfect human beings interpreted such absolute truths. Hitchens’ claims were supported by another article from Psychology Today which says that â€Å"disagreement [between religions] have little to do with the existence of God, but everything to do with claims of communication with ‘Him’, of whose holy books contain ‘accurate’ divine revelation† (Niose). For both Christian Hitchens and David Niose, the affairs of man has contributed to the aggression between different cultures. The irrationality that pervades â€Å"religious† debate hinder individuals from seeing the negative effects of their actions. Tesco is a profit making business which started out by selling groceries, but now they sell a whole variety of products from tea bags all the way up to televisions. The purpose of Tesco is to please every customer and keep them loyal for a life time, as this saying says on their website. Our Core Purpose is to create value for customers to earn their lifetime loyalty. The aims and objectives of Tescos are; To capitalize on sales Develop and maintain the number one retail business in the UK. To outperform rivals and remain the market leader. Highest aim of Tesco is to maximize revenue. To supply goods/services that is low-priced and affordable to consumers or the public Tesco would want to expand their business buy making new green buildings for their stores to keep their carbon footprint down. By doing this it would appeal to wider customer bases who believe in environmentally friendly buildings are to be built to sustain global warming. On the other hand Oxfam is a charity organization, which was formed in 1995 by a group of independent non-governmental organizations. Their objectives are to work together for a superior effect on the global stage to reduce poverty and injustice. Oxfam is a world front-runner in the delivery of emergency aid; Oxfam also implants long term development programs in weak societies. Also Oxfam help people to campaign with people and organizations for things such as; Ending unfair trade Demand better health and education services for all. The aims and objectives of Oxfam would be; Support third world nations in any way they can. Get rid of poverty, distress and suffering. Educate people about natural disasters and the effect this has on poverty. To campaign for a fair-minded world. Encourage western nations to aid poorer third world countries. Oxfams main concern would be the donation of food to relieve famine, over the years Oxfam has developed plans to fight the causes of famine. In addition to food and medication Oxfam also offers tools to allow people to become self-sufficient. Ownership Tesco is a Private Limited Company or Plc., it is owned by several people or thousands of people. The reason Tesco is a Plc. is because of the sheer size of the business, it is huge. Due to its size it would be tough to raise sufficient funds for Tesco if it was owned by a sole trader or by partners whereas in a Plc., the company is owned by shareholders who fund the company. This happens by the people buying shares in the company and becoming shareholders. Sometimes this may seem more appealing to people who are investing because they have the bonus of limited liability. Limited liability is where if the business goes bankrupt then you only lose the money that you invested. Unlimited liability relates to soul traders and partnerships if one of these were to go bankrupt then they could lose all their personal assets over it and the money they put into it. Stakeholders influence the purpose of Tesco because if it werent for the investors then the business wouldnt be able to run. The investors invest their own money to better the business and receive a profit. This is how the following could influence the organization; Customers Customers would want to be treated equally and with loyalty or they would go elsewhere, Tesco could lose customers. Employees Employees want better pay or theyll treat the customers in a poor manner so this would mean the customers would go elsewhere. Shareholders Shareholders invest their own money into the business and want great returns or the share values would decrease in value. Pressure groups Pressure groups could stop the business from opening stores in small communities, which would affect many small businesses. Trade unions Trade unions want staff to be treated fairly, equally and with respect. Also to be paid reasonable wages irrespective of age, race or gender. Suppliers Suppliers want fairness in business trading or would give the company a bad reputation. Government Government want their taxes paid, also to reduce unemployment in the local areas. Local community the community could protest against Tesco or boycott the business, if they damage the local environment or wildlife. Oxfam is a charity so they wont be owned by anybody, but there will be paid staff and a CEO. The CEO would deal with all the staff and media, but all the choices would be made by a panel of directors. The panel of directors would be chosen by the individuals who pay (donors/associates). The directors have the duty to follow their members or associates desires and do what they aim or set out to do. I.e. help third world countries or provide health and education to the poor. For Oxfam the stakeholder which would be the panel of directors would influence the organization because, if they were not to listen to their members/donors thoughts then they could make the wrong decisions for the organization and this could possibly put the organization out of business. I.e. if the directors were to ignore their members then no one would support Oxfam and could damage the business. This is how the following could influence the organization; Customers Customers want to be treated fair and equal or they could go to another rival charity. Employees Employees could be working voluntary or on a wage but either way they would want to be treated respectively, regardless of age, race or gender. Shareholders Shareholders within Oxfam would be the directors. They would want whats best for the business because it is a charity and it isnt a profit making business. Pressure groups Pressure groups could stop Oxfam from using plastic bags for their organization as it is not very economical. Trade unions Trade unions want staff to be treated fairly, equally and with respect. Also to be paid reasonable wages irrespective of age, race or gender. Suppliers Suppliers could provide free clothing to the charity but they could be in bad condition and this could affect how the charity would sell them. Government Government want their taxes paid. Local community the community could protest against Oxfam for not asking from clothes around the community instead of importing them from abroad. Tescos Organization chart As you can see Tescos organization chart is a hierarchical structure and a complex structure because Tesco have many levels of hierarchy and many leaders of certain departments. This means or shows that the power of owning the business is spread out. I.E. the people at the top of the chart (Chairman) and people at the bottom of the chart (employees) can make decisions about what happens within the business. Also each store in the Tesco series of supermarkets has a store manager who makes decisions regarding the store he/she is managing. Then all the managers in the region or area report the information to their regional manager. Tesco has a distributed organizational structure and the advantages of these are; Senior managers can concentrate on the most crucial decisions. Decision making powers held by the employees, may motivate them and increase their work ethic. Responses to challenges and alterations are much quicker in a distributed organizational structure. The span control Tescos has many leaders and people as heads of certain departments. This makes it easier for them to manage and control their employees and staff. Tescos have divided the responsibilities for leaders to look after certain amount of people. Oxfam Organization chart Oxfams organizational structure is based on just making enough money to cover costs. As you can see In the chart above everyone is working together to achieve a goal. Oxfam doesnt have many head of departments as Tesco, because they have teams based at different places around world and all work together. Directors The panel of directors would make the choices for the charity and take on board the views of the members/associates. Finance the finance department would look at the records of Oxfam, and provide the directors with information that they can use for future decision making. i.e., the cost of donating charity to the remote places in the world. But the directors would need to be continually conscious of their financial state, or could harm the business in future without knowing so. Staff and volunteers staff and volunteers could keep the charities income raising by selling the products within the store, and working as hard as possible for the business. Fundraising and supporter making decision Fundraising is key for Oxfam to survive because; it relies on people providing money so they could help needy people around the globe. Oxfam also take into account their donators and supporters views to better their services. International aid this is where Oxfam supports and helps people all over the world. They do this only by the money they are provided with from certain people and organizations. Span control Oxfam has many teams around the world that manage certain amount of employees/volunteers. So the employees are supervised and get their work done effectively. Style of Organizations The style of Tescos organization is very organized and very direct. As a customer you would want to receive the highest level of customer service from such a big store like Tesco. I would think that most of Tesco strategic aims are based around or on their customers feedback, like if they wanted to expand into other areas of business, like selling hardware and home furniture they would have to see if customers were interested and would they actually buy from them. We are used to seeing Tesco in all places as they are looking to expand and dominate their competitors. They would also expect Oxfam to open many stores across the nation to help provide jobs and aid for suffering people, also to provide customers/local people with jobs and by opening more stores this could help raise the amount that Oxfam donate to suffering people. Customers that influence the charity would like to see more posts for voluntary work which could help them reach their objectives and aims in the specific time. Tesco suppliers the suppliers of Tesco would benefit from their strategic aims and objectives because Tesco are always looking to expand. This would mean more demand for products from their suppliers, also meaning that more stores are open and more jobs made for people. This indicates more revenue made, and more cash spent on suppliers for products. The supplies would be needed throughout the world and would need to be reliable because Tesco would rely on their supplies heavily. Tesco would rely on their suppliers to deliver goods and products to all their stores nationally and internationally, so suppliers would be needed around the world, in order to cope with the demand of products that Tesco require. Militancy in Yemen Essay -- Social Studies

The militant groups related to al-Qaeda have gained considerable strength in the southern region of Yemen. These militant groups are reported to be stronger than the country’s military, and this can be seen from the level of the expansion made by the militancy. During his regime, Ali Abdullah Saleh described Yemen as â€Å"an island in a sea of al-Qaeda† (Raghavan). In late February of 2012, a regime change happened in Yemen as Saleh stepped down from the presidency, and Hadi was elected the new president in a one candidate election. In the midst of the Arab Spring movement to the transfer of power from Saleh to Hadi and the present situations in Yemen, the Islamist militant groups have garnered greater control over some of the state’s southern regions. The emergence and expansion of al-Qaeda related Islamist militant groups can be seen as an effect of the separationist movement that exists within the southern region of Yemen. The separationist movement arose in the south, in response to the perceived socioeconomic inequality between the northern and southern regions under Saleh. Before its unification, there were two regions of Yemen; the north had the Ottoman and Zaidi (Shiite-sect) influence, while the south was influenced by socialism. In the 1990, Yemen was united under Saleh, but a civil war broke out in 1994, resulting in the emergence of separationist groups. Even though this protest was put down, more protests emerged as years went on. For example, â€Å"al-Herak† held protests for â€Å"equal rights for southerners in 2007, and their initially peaceful movement was met with deadly force by former president Ali Abdullah Saleh's regime† (al-Shamahi). Two stories that show divisions or conflicts within communities

Both of the stories ‘The train from Rhodesia' and ‘Leela's Friend' illustrate divisions of classes and some of them result in conflicts. ‘The train from Rhodesia' is in an allegory form to convey the deep hatred of the author towards her racially divided home country – apartheid. ‘Leela's Friend' shows the class division by demonstrating the prejudice that people have on those who are low in hierarchy. ‘The train from Rhodesia' is about a train from Rhodesia ‘calling' into the station with all the white passengers on it and there are the vendors who crowd round the train trying to sell their wares. The train is personified by using verbs such as ‘creaking, jerking, jostling, gasping' and saying it has ‘a dwindling body behind it'. This emphasizes the classes divisions between the rich passengers on the train and the poor sellers in the station. The poverty of black people seems to be the reason for division. The ‘creases' in stationmaster's uniform and his ‘barefoot children' all give the impression of scarcity in the people inside the station. However, the girl on the train was ‘throwing' a ‘hard kind' chocolate to the dogs. This use of antithesis here accentuates the division – not only in class – but also in poverty. There is also contrast of the attitudes and feelings of the young man and the young woman. The twist of story at the end is that the young woman's rejection of the lion carving which her husband has bought for her and which she obviously admires. The man is ‘arguing with him for fun' while the woman's face is ‘drawn up, wryly, like the face of a discomforted child'. The use of oxymoron in the epiphany of the woman and the shocked man here show another division due to the different views and opinions upon the way of treating poor black people. Gordimer describes the people and the setting in the third-person but does show us the young woman's point of view on several occasions. For instance, in line 168-169 there is no subject ‘she' in the description of shame upon her. This emphasizes the guilty among some white people about the exploitation of the country and also made the reader feel empathetic towards the young woman. The ‘majestic' and ‘heraldic' lion was ‘fallen on its side in the corner' lead the main theme of the story – the richer and privileged white European arrive and exploit South Africa's labour and move on, they are never really part of the country as the train symbolizes. The central narrative question in ‘Leela's Friend' is ‘Did Sidda steal the gold chain? ‘ He is been prejudiced by Mr. and Mrs. Sivasanker for the missing chain of Leela just because he is the only one servant of the house. The story circles around the sense of hierarchy and honesty and directness of children. The sense of level is shown in the beginning of the story while ‘Mr Sivsanker was standing in the front veranda of his house. ‘ Also, verbs such as ‘send' and ‘keep' imply a pet imagery of Sidda and this highlights the class divisions among the servant and his master. Narayan use an irony in positioning him in the house: ‘she made him squat on the floor'. Even a 5-year-old child can decide to have Sidda stay and ‘command' him to do whatever you want. This imagery is more symbolized in line 79 and 80 where Leela is represented as ‘little princess' while Sidda is described as her ‘pet'. ‘He looked at her mutely, like an animal. ‘ This pet imagery is used by Narayan throughout the story. The golden chain, the running away, not permitting to sleep in the house all accentuate his level and hierarchy comparing to the owner of the house. He is prejudged as he is ‘already looked queer' when Mrs Sivasanker knows that the chain is missing. Even he has been proved that he has not taken the chain; Mr Sivasanker still calls him a ‘criminal'. All these ironies of prejudice show that the class division within this community and all the cause of this is that Sidda is in a position of servant and therefore loses his right. Both of the stories accentuate the unfairness and injustice upon the weak class as the result of class division and their poverty. ‘The train from Rhodesia' uses the woman's point of view and her epiphany to make the reader feel sympathetic towards the vendor. ‘Leela's Friend' uses the pet imagery to emphasize the idea of classes and prejudice on poors.

Living Arrangement Contract

My philosophy of marriage yours and your significant others philosophy of marriage. This is my Philosophy on marriage. When I think of marriage I think of a special bond between two people. I believe marriage is a choice among the ones that have a mutual relationship and they want to show other people how much they care about each other. The two make a mutual decision to have a ceremony of some sort and have a government recognize there union and that they share almost every facet of their lives together. Marriage to me means that they will endure good times and bad times together while showing mutual respect towards each other.My wife’s Philosophy on marriage. â€Å"Marriage, to me, is kind of lake taking a leap of faith. When you vow to love and be with the same person for the rest of your life, you’re putting the hopes and dreams and thoughts and feelings of two completely different lives and people into one. Finding a way to make it work isn’t always the eas iest thing, but that’s where the teamwork rally starts. It about believing and knowing the other person will always be there for you; to hear you for, support you when you need it, and to pick you up when you think you’ve fallen for good.Marriage is a partnership, a friendship, and a bond that takes a lot of work; but always reaps the best benefits and can reward you for the rest of your life if you care for it properly. † My philosophy of love and my significant others philosophy of love. The top layer represents the most extreme case of love because it has the most chocolate of all the layers. In this case that would mean love set aside for my wife. Love to me is a feeling that is strong that it can supersede anything.Love changes your feelings toward a person; whether it is for the right reasons or not. I have found someone so special to me that has made my feelings and emotions change for the better. Love also brings in the sensual side of me that I do not share with others. For one that would be gross and another bond with her is set apart from her and the others. (The cake in between the frosting) My philosophy of love towards my now wife of seven years is still there, and still burning strong inside me. I have seen how love has made me do things for her that I would not even slow down to think about anybody else for.The next layer of the chocolate cake is still very tasty but doesn’t include the same taste and goes as far as the first layer with my wife. I can also extend that love to my children and my family, (another layer and my friends (another layer and so on†¦) that are very close to me. The love for my children are just as strong for my wife, but in a totally different way. I would do anything for my children as long as it will not make them into a bad person. For instance, I will not rob a bank for my child if they needed money, but I might inflict pain on someone who has hurt my two young daughters, all in the name of love for my children.My wife’s Philosophy on love. â€Å"Love is something that can come in so many forms. It is shown in so many different ways and means different things to different people. When you love someone you don’t mind doing things you normally wouldn’t do if it makes the other person happy. Thinking of them and showing them affection should be second nature. You want to make them laughs; it warms your heart to see them smile. Love is something that is felt within but you find different little way to bring it out and share it. Religion is just another thing that is always there, but not necessarily in the fore front of what we think about on a daily basis. I for one am a spiritual person. I believe in a higher power, but I don’t believe in organized religion.I understand why it is there and that most people in the world need it in their lives. I don’t have a problem with it and I am always willing to listen to any body about it as long as they aren’t trying to push it on me, and being over bearing. My wife on the other hand is Jewish and doesn’t practice like most do except around the bigger holiday’s, such as, Chanukah, pass over, etc†¦ And we are both cool with that. In fact I kind of know more about here religion then she does. Coping with vehicle responsibilities is easy. I have my vehi cles and she has hers.We each pay for and maintain our own vehicles so there are no problems what so ever. We both share the driving responsibilities and it works out great. Coping with spouse independence can be tricky at times especially now that I am back in school. Sometimes she wants to go out and have girl’s night out, and I fully understand. But I have to ask her to limit herself so that I am not the only one to watch the kids all by I why doing school work all the time. I sometimes wish that I had more free time. My personal independence has changed a lot. I have to think about not just myself. Like when I was younger.I have many responsibilities’ now; Wife, Children, Work, and School. I have always been good at taken care of myself when it is needed most. Coping with academic or occupati9onal issues has been a top priority on my list. I make sure that I take care of my work activities and do the right thing for my company and for myself in order to keep a job. It is extremely important now that the recession is still going on. That also ties into my academics. I try to do as well as I possibly can because I have found that if you want to do well in life you must make sure you get your education and do as well as possible.Just getting by was my old way of life, and I have found that did not lead me to what I wanted in life. Intimacy has never been a problem for me. I have found someone that I care about and love. I am still very much able to be intimate with my wife. Communication has always been a trial and error thing with me. Over the years I have learned to listen to my wife and do what she says. By doing so I am saving a lot of grief. (Just kidding) I do try to listen to all points in any argument and then try to make the best decision possible.That was a problem earlier in life where I might have let my ego take over and make a wrong choice because I wouldn’t know how to communicate. Coping with money, like must people can be trying. I work at handling my finances and try not to over spend from time to time. Social activities, in my life has, diminished mainly because I am so involved in with my immediate family, school, and work. There is not enough time in the day. Once I finish with school I should be able to be involved in social activities. Rearing of children has been difficult at times, but again it is another part of life and I think that I am doing well.I do wish I could spend more time with them then I do, but I think they understand that I am doing it for them. Finally, coping with household responsibilities; like I have been saying this how time. I have to manage my work load, (meaning school, work, family, etc†¦) find the time to share the household responsibilities. Right now I have projects everywhere. I am building a tree house, remodeling a basement, building a fence. And so on and so on. When I have free time I try to work on something. I have become quite good at juggling.
